“Personal Energy Management”

Today I wanted to share with you some information that has been in my awareness for some time now, but as with a lot of things, I do not always ‘act’ on what I know :-(

Personal energy management is the key to higher productivity and effectiveness which in turn leads to greater success in life, particularly work / life balance.  I am assured that we will forever be in the state of constant re-balancing unless we set about to take action and create new routines and rituals in our lives.

Are you firing on all cylinders?

Because Time is Finite, and we can’t control time, as our demand increases we generally only reach out to the resource of time to keep our capacity up to par.  But what happens when the day gets longer and longer?  A massive decrease in productivity.  The one resource that we do have control over is our energy and there are 4 seperate sources of energy.

  1. PHYSICAL = quantity
  2. EMOTIONAL = quality
  3. MENTAL = focus
  4. THE HUMAN SPIRIT = purpose

I would like to thank Jayson Shawver for the sharing the link to this video you about to watch.  And I highly encourage you to take the full hour, limiting any distractions to simply absorb it all.  It has truly inspired me to take action (and I am ‘well over 30 yrs old’ so I HAVE to take action!).

I first heard about Tony Schwartz from the wonderful Eben Pagan when I went through the Wake Up Productive 90 day course late last year.

Tony’s book “The Power Of Full Engagement” is quoted on numerous occasions as being one of the primary sources of inspiration for Eben in creating his $20 million a year business.

I have just ordered the book from Amazon  :-)

For further insights into this subject, I highly recommend visiting Katie Freiling’s blog as she recently attended the Guru Mastermind weekend with Eben Pagan with our good friends Jonathan Budd, Mike Dillard and many more masterful marketers.   And yes… I am a little jealous that I am downunder and could not attend that event!

Personally I find the topic of personal energy management incredibly interesting.   So much so that I am researching into the needs of my fellow home business owners with an aim to discover exactly what could be provided to assist in the process of establishing higher productivity habits, and more importantly maintaining them.  For instance, would it be beneficial to have weekly or monthly accountability ?  I know that based on my previous experiences of wanting to form new routines and rituals that I can very easily fall off the wagon and revert back to my old ways with even just the slightest hiccup in daily life.

For example, a business trip or 3 day seminar can easily throw me right off track.  I know I am only accountable to myself of course, but I have yet to fully embed the concept of productive energy management into my subconscious.   It seems I am fighting against time, and as we know, time is finite!  Beleive me I have a lot of work to do in giving up my multi-tasking ways, learning to focus on one thing at a time and remove distruptions and interuptions from this focus time.  I am now my own case study :)

What I would like to know is has anyone else fallen prey to the seduction of the internet, allow the compulsive need to check and re-check emails, keep the instant messenger services open “just incase someone wants to reach you” and/or continually starting a new project or task then move onto the next before completion of the first?

Are you able to answer these questions openly and honestly?  Would you personally have a need to “detox” your home business routine and then start again with a fresh new schedule and work / life time plan so you can best utilise your energy?

If you are a home business owner, I would love to hear from you.  Please leave a comment by answering some or all of the following questions……

  1. What are you major problem areas with your work at home productivity?
  2. If you had private coaching phone calls with Tony Schwartz, what questions would you ask?
  3. Would you be willing to pay for hands-on help with maintaining a new routine for higher productivity, and if so, how much monthly or annually?
  4. What is you ultimate business / life relationship goal?  Do you believe in the 4 hour work week or would a 20 hour work week be more realistic for you?
  5. Any other comments?

I look forward to reading your responses and will send each and everyone of you a surprise gift for giving up some of your very valuable time in helping me with this research.

To your success in attaining a wonderful work / life balance,

Jodie x

I should also have mentioned, that I'm currently doing a major purge of emails and junk stuff that have been distracting me too much of late. I haven't finished yet (work in progress), but I'm feeling so much better already for having done what I've done so far. It really does help with concentration/focus!

I certainly have not been firing on all cylinders of late, but that is currently changing :)

Your post is very timely for me – thank you :)

Thanks so much Jodie, this has been so important for me to watch today from my hospitl bed. As you know this is my 6th day in hospital and first day I have had energy to concentrate for longer than 10 minutes on anything.

I advise everyone to watch this video and most importantly take action. Especially us women who are so proud of 'multi tasking', we need to have full dedicated focus for short periods of time. I for one will be putting a plan into action tonight once I get home.

Thanks again Jodie, Jason and Tony

Great post Jodie. I'll admit – i've done all those time-wasting things more often than I care to imagine. It takes vigilance on my part to keep focused and constantly declutter my workspace- both virtual and physical.

The concept of 'do less, accpomplish more' seems counterintuitive but it has merit.

It's certainly easy to be very busy without being very productive.

btw, love how you wrote this post with the backlinks to partners.
