My Interpretation of “Authentic Marketing”
In my reality, “authentic marketing” is a term only used by a handful of my esteemed colleagues most of whom have come from the network marketing arena.
Perhaps you have heard of “attraction marketing“? LOL - no doubt you say! Well if you can indulge me, I would like to share with you my interpretation of both by highlighting some subtle differences.
Attraction Marketing is what got me started, even before I brought my business online. I was a student of the Law of Attraction and without actually being aware of what was happening at the time, I had the ability to attract some amazing people and the most wonderful experiences into my reality simply by being focused on what I was doing.
Now please first understand that I am a big believer in that there are NO COINCIDENCES so in December 2007 while heavily involved in a giving circle project with one of my good friends and business partner, I literally stumbled my way into Youtube to discover the teachings of the remarkable Jonathan Budd.
The how’s and why’s are pretty much irrelevant but was is important is that this dynamic young man was speaking a language that I understood. He was speaking his truth. His message was clear and absolutely authentic. I felt drawn to him, drawn to call him and get more information about his work and what he was creating.
My first communications with Jonathan were amazing, I felt as if he was giving me the key to the door, the answer to how I was going to build a business by leveraging the power of the internet and more importantly by leveraging my time.
In January 2008 I joined him in the Travel program he was promoting called Global Resorts Network. This enabled me to get access to his home study courses on internet marketing, list building and attraction marketing with the concept of “branding” myself.
My first step was to get onto youtube. So I sat on the floor of my apartment in the middle of Brisbane City and recorded my very first video. It was a video about what I believed in, how energy and the law of attraction works, how we can get more awareness of our own potential by heading down the path of self development. I did not intend to sell anything on this video, I just wanted to express my thoughts, my own awareness of where I was at in life.
This then lead to producing a few more philosophical and appreciation ‘discussions’ to be uploaded to the world wide web. I was being ME, being authentic, not once was I trying to “sell” anything.
Then, I changed my message, I started talking more about the potential of the internet as being a way to create wealth. I look back over those videos and I can see the change in my authenticity. I was ‘reciting’ what I was learning as opposed to stating my understanding. I had started producing video messages that I “thought” people wanted to see rather than trusting my intuition and speaking about what was in my reality.
I fell victim to the “marketing game”.
Thankfully with more knowledge under my belt, I returned to my original flow and just started putting videos out about what I felt was important information that people may not be aware of. This resulted in a number of my soon to be business partners contacting me because they had “found” me and resonated with my message.
When I was authentic, I attracted people. When I was doing what I “thought” people wanted to hear - I did not!
18 months on, I am now of the understanding that being authentic is most definately the attractor factor. Being a salesperson, selling a message that does not come from within you, a message that comes from the “need” to make money actually results in the complete opposite - no money!
Where am I going with this….
In a nutshell, my gut feeling says that the term “authentic marketing” is actually more about potential relationship building. It is what attracts people to you, your product or service. “Attraction Marketing” however seems to be easily mis-interpreted. It could easily be one and the same, but where it gets “stuffed up” is in the thought that branding, or getting yourself out onto the social networks is all it takes.
For example: so many people have set up a social network profile be it, youtube, facebook, myspace or twitter and then they proceed to talk ONLY about themself, their product or service. This is the voice of the ego especially when the result is that NO-ONE is being attracted to you. Attraction Marketing is easily misunderstood because the lazy man (and don’t forget I delved into this space) thinks that by putting yourself “out there” letting people “see you” is all that it takes to be successful. Reality check - babuum… What’s the old saying “treat others as you would expect to be treated”. If you hate people screaming at you to buy this or join that - then don’t do it yourself!
In these times of high speed communication and A.D.D living, people need to CONNECT with people. It’s a basic human need. Reach out to your new friends and followers and be of service to them, be the true authentic YOU and ask for no more than you would like to receive in return.
Writing this has inspired me to get out my video camera and start talking from the heart - so stay tuned, I’ll have a new youtube channel coming soon.
Have a brilliant day - you deserve it!

Great insights, Jodie. The kicker with 'attraction marketing' is that, for the concept to be effective, people need something to be attracted TO …. not just an information parrot.
That makes so much sense. That's why passion is so important. It's the energy that resonates off of you that draws like energy towards you. If you are not sincere about what you are doing, it won't feel right to you, and the people you come in contact with will feel it also. Great Post.
Great post, Jodie. I've had similar experiences. We attract based on who we are. Just be. Which is all the world really needs from each of us. To just be who we really are.
I've met the most wonderful people via Twitter, blogs and such. We talk by phone, meet locally in person, chat on Skype.
These tools have another side. They can highlight the broader lack of connection people feel in their lives. Everybody is talking nobody is listening.
When you are truly present with someone, listening and interested plus being who you are, people will want to connect with you. Great things can happen at that point.
Hey Jodie…love who you are and what you have to say! I think being authentic is very tough for most people because they have never tried it or even know how to proceed. We are bombarded with the thought that we need to emulate everyone else from business gurus to movie stars to whatever. Anyhow, nice stuff!
Hey Jodie, thanks for sharing this great message of authenticity. I love the way you "walk the walk", always striving to be true to yourself and to connect with others on a real level with others.
It's so important for each of us to let our own personal light shine. Isn't this an incredible industry, bringing not only financial success but honest to goodness personal evolution? Love it, and love you!!!
